After being introduced by Jack Lemmon and receiving a prolonged standing ovation from the audience, Chaplin made his way to the stage, visibly moved and touched by the moment. As he accepted his award, the audience continued to applaud and stand in tribute for over 12 minutes, which is considered one of the longest standing ovations in the history of the Academy Awards. Emotional, Chaplin said:

"Thank you so much. This is an emotional moment for me and words seem so futile, so feeble. I can only say thank you for the honor of inviting me here."
